E. J. Headlee was born in 1880 in Brewer Prairie, and began teaching in 1898 at age 18 He married early, was in business for insurance and banking before moving to Denton in 1917 so his five daughters could attend CIA (now TWU). His son Deats attended
North Texas. Headlee cultivated many good friendships in Denton. He established the Denton Doings newspaper in 1935, which ran for 38 years and was dedicated to personalities and related events. Some persons he remembers were John W. Cloud, Riley Cross, Weldon Owens, Oran and Loran Crouch, Claude Bennet and J. T. Frady, W. C. Orr Sr. and Jr., and many others.
